Introduction
Compendium of Canadian Forestry Statistics
The Compendium of Canadian Forestry Statistics is a selection of statistical forestry data published annually. The Compendium has been available on-line since 1997. Before 1997, it was produced as a printed publication annually beginning in 1992.
The Compendium has nine components, each of which presents statistical information compiled from the National Forestry Database. Data are displayed for each jurisdiction in Canada as well as at the national level. Graphs representing the data are also presented.
Compendium Highlights
A Compendium Highlights table is provided for quick access to national totals for each of the nine chapters.
Quick Facts
Quick Facts is provided for national totals in more detail for each of the nine components. It has been condensed from previous versions to display the more commonly used information.
Detailed Reports
Detailed provincial and territorial reports have been published in the Compendium since 2001. These reports present the finest level of detail in the National Forestry Database.
Releases
Data are published biannually in June and again in October to accommodate any revisions or incomplete data.
Organization of Information
Each part of the Web site contains an Introduction, Terminology, and References page. The Introduction provides a description of the data presented and Terminology provides definitions for terms used. References mentioned in the Introduction or Terminology sections are found on the Reference page.
Data Sources
The data displayed in the Compendium are taken from the National Forestry Database and are generally provided by the provincial or territorial resource management organizations. Some data is collected from Statistics Canada. The Canadian Forest Service compiles the data for federal lands provided by the responsible federal departments.
Methodology
Totals for Canada are published when all provinces and territories have provided data for the reporting year. If data are unavailable and are considered significant, a total for Canada will not be published.
Reporting Period
Data in the Compendium are provided for the fiscal year. For example, the Compendium 2002 provides data on activities up to and including fiscal year 2002/03. Data for 2003 will be displayed without Canada totals.
