Agriculture Division of Statistics Canada conducts a census once every 5 years of farms across the province. The last census in 1996 indicated that a total area of 11 285 hectares were being managed for Christmas trees. The census reported that in 1995 a total of 586 farms reported a harvest of 555 136 trees. Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario (non-profit organization funded by farmers in the business of growing Christmas trees) do not maintain statistics on production by its members but are highly knowledgeable of current markets and production levels. They estimate that that the total harvest of 555 136 trees in 1995 reported by the census overstates production by as much as 50%. They estimated that the average wholesale price is $10.95 per tree. Applying this price to the estimate of 555 136 trees harvested results in a total wholesale value of $6 078 739. These estimates of the number of trees and their asociated wholesale value will be reported for the 1998/99, 1999/00 and subsequent years until the results of the next census become available.

2001 - 2004
|
Agriculture Division of Statistics Canada conducts a census once every 5 years of farms across the province. The last census in 2001 indicated that a total of 918 farms managed an area of 8 808 hectares for Christmas trees. The 2001 census no longer reported the number of trees harvested, therefore the number of trees harvested (433 286) was calculated based on the area managed. The 1996 census reported both number of trees as well as area managed. (i.e 1996 census report 555 136 trees harvested on 11 285 hectares). Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario (non-profit organization funded by farmers in the business of growing Christmas trees) estimated that the average wholesale price is $10.95 per tree. Applying this price to the estimate of 433 286 trees harvested results in a total wholesale value of $4 744 487. These estimates of the number of trees and their asociated wholesale value will be reported for 2001/02, and subsequent years until the results of the next census become available.

2006 - 2006
|
Agriculture Division of Statistics Canada conducts a census once every 5 years of farms across the province. The last census in 2006 indicated that a total of 725 farms managed an area of 6 392 hectares for Christmas trees. The 2001 and 2006 census no longer reported the number of trees harvested, therefore the number of trees harvested (314 438)in 2006 was calculated based on the area managed. The 1996 census reported both number of trees as well as area managed. (i.e 1996 census report 555 136 trees harvested on 11 285 hectares). Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario (non-profit organization funded by farmers in the business of growing Christmas trees) estimated that the average wholesale price ranges between $15 and $40 per tree depending on the species (average $27.50). Applying this average price to the estimate of 314 438 trees harvested results in a total wholesale value of $8 647 045. These estimates of the number of trees and their asociated wholesale value will be reported for 2006/07, and subsequent years until the results of the next census become available.
